Letter to Lord Vallance of Balham - Chair of the Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce
Dear Lord Vallance,
We thought it important to bring to your attention a substantial and unusual British intellectual-property portfolio owned by GENERAL INTELLIGENCE PLC, a Scottish company established in 1896. Given your work as Chair of the Prime Minister’s AI Taskforce, we believe the portfolio may be of interest in the context of the United Kingdom’s ambitions in artificial intelligence, machine intelligence and the longer-term development of general intelligence.
The portfolio comprises thirty UK Class 42 trade marks, including INTELLIGENCE®, GENERAL INTELLIGENCE®, SUPERINTELLIGENCE® and UNIVERSAL INTELLIGENCE®, together with more than one hundred other intelligence-related intellectual-property assets. These include a substantial collection of intelligence-related names, associated digital assets and a developing body of research and consultancy material.
What makes the portfolio particularly distinctive is that it is not simply a collection of intellectual-property rights. We have developed thirty corresponding artificial intelligence consultancy frameworks, each designed for a particular commercial sector or institutional environment. They range from building societies, retail and commercial banking, asset management and investment banking to insurance, reinsurance, financial advice, financial technology, offshore energy and specialist insurance markets.
Each framework considers how artificial intelligence might contribute to the intelligence, decision-making, operating capability and long-term value of the institution concerned. The underlying proposition is that the requirements of a building society are not those of an investment bank, an offshore energy insurer or a reinsurer. The potential of artificial intelligence must be understood in the context of the institution in which it is to be applied.
The portfolio therefore reflects a broader ambition: to develop a coherent intellectual and commercial architecture through which artificial intelligence can be examined and applied across a substantial range of the United Kingdom’s economy.
Our intention is not simply to preserve these assets as intellectual property, nor to regard their value solely in terms of trade mark ownership. We wish to develop and deploy them constructively, where appropriate, in support of machine intelligence in the United Kingdom and the country's longer-term technological, commercial and strategic interests.
We believe that the distinction between artificial intelligence as a technology and intelligence as an institutional capability is becoming increasingly important. The former concerns what machines can do; the latter concerns how organisations understand information, exercise judgement, make decisions, learn and create value. Our work is concerned with the relationship between the two.
The thirty frameworks are described in the accompanying notes. We have included these in some detail because their individual applications illustrate the breadth of the portfolio and the different environments in which its intellectual property may have practical relevance.
The portfolio has attracted international interest, including from parties in Silicon Valley and China. We regard this interest as an indication of the potential significance of the assets, while remaining conscious of their British provenance and the opportunity to develop them in a manner that contributes to the United Kingdom's position in machine intelligence.
We are particularly conscious that the United Kingdom should not consider its position in artificial intelligence solely in terms of research institutions, computing infrastructure, models and companies. Intellectual property, terminology, conceptual frameworks, specialist knowledge and the ability to apply intelligence across established industries are also relevant components of a national capability.
GENERAL INTELLIGENCE PLC has a long history, but our interest is firmly directed towards the future. We see the development of artificial general intelligence and increasingly capable machine intelligence as among the most consequential technological undertakings of this century. We also believe that the practical application of these capabilities across existing institutions and industries deserves serious attention alongside the development of the underlying technology.
We considered it appropriate to bring the portfolio to your attention because of the potential relevance of its intellectual property and associated frameworks to the work of the Prime Minister's AI Taskforce. We would be pleased to provide further information on the assets, their provenance, the associated research and our longer-term intentions for their development, should you consider that useful.
We would also welcome the opportunity for the portfolio to be brought to the attention of the appropriate individuals within the Government's artificial intelligence, science, technology and industrial policy communities, should you consider that its potential merits further examination.
Our principal objective is to ensure that this substantial body of British intellectual property is developed thoughtfully and constructively, with proper regard to its potential contribution to the United Kingdom.
We wish you every success in your important work.
Yours sincerely,
X from GENERAL INTELLIGENCE PLC
NOTES FOR LORD VALLANCE
The thirty artificial intelligence consultancy frameworks
The following notes describe the thirty sector-specific consultancy frameworks developed by X from GENERAL INTELLIGENCE PLC. They are intended to explain the distinctive purpose of each framework, the institutional environment for which it has been developed and the principal questions it seeks to address.
The frameworks are not thirty claims to have developed separate artificial intelligence technologies. They are thirty distinct intellectual-property and consultancy propositions for examining the application of artificial intelligence within particular sectors. Their common foundation is the belief that technological capability should be assessed by reference to institutional purpose, the quality of decisions and the creation of lasting value.
1. ABSOLUTE INTELLIGENCE® — Chartered financial analysts and investment analysis
ABSOLUTE INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for chartered financial analysts and investment analysis. Its central concern is the quality of investment intelligence: the ability to interpret extensive financial information, distinguish evidence from assumption, test investment propositions and understand the relationships that may influence the value of an asset or portfolio.
Artificial intelligence offers considerable potential in the analysis of company accounts, market information, economic indicators, corporate announcements, financial statements, valuations and investment research. It may assist analysts in identifying inconsistencies, comparing businesses, examining assumptions, evaluating scenarios and monitoring changes in an investment thesis.
The framework is particularly concerned with the distinction between information and investment intelligence. More information does not necessarily produce better analysis. A sophisticated model may identify patterns without understanding their economic significance, while a persuasive investment recommendation may conceal weaknesses in its underlying assumptions.
ABSOLUTE INTELLIGENCE® therefore considers how artificial intelligence can strengthen financial analysis while preserving professional scepticism, independent challenge and accountability. Its objective is to improve the quality, consistency and defensibility of investment judgement.
2. ADAPTIVE INTELLIGENCE® — General insurance companies
ADAPTIVE INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for general insurers. It addresses the need for insurance organisations to understand and respond to risks that change over time.
Insurance depends upon the interpretation of historical experience, but historical data cannot always describe the risks an insurer will face in the future. Climate, economic conditions, customer behaviour, technology, claims patterns, legal developments and the characteristics of insured assets can all change. An insurer must therefore understand not only what has happened, but how the underlying conditions of risk are evolving.
Artificial intelligence may assist in connecting underwriting information, claims experience, external risk indicators, portfolio data and operational information. It can help identify emerging patterns, changes in exposure, deterioration in assumptions and differences between predicted and actual outcomes.
The framework considers adaptive underwriting, portfolio monitoring, claims intelligence, changing customer circumstances, model performance and the ability of an organisation to learn continuously from experience.
Its central proposition is that an insurer should monitor not only changes in external risk, but also changes in the reliability of its own understanding. The objective is a more responsive, informed and resilient insurance institution.
3. ALTERNATIVE INTELLIGENCE® — Alternative investment analysts
ALTERNATIVE INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for alternative investment analysis, including the work of chartered alternative investment analysts.
Alternative investments frequently involve complex structures, less standardised information, specialised markets, limited liquidity and evidence that may be difficult to compare directly with conventional asset classes. Analysis can require the interpretation of legal documentation, valuations, market intelligence, operational information, counterparties, financing arrangements and the wider economic circumstances surrounding an investment.
Artificial intelligence may assist in reviewing large documentary collections, identifying relationships between seemingly separate sources, testing assumptions and examining the implications of changing market conditions.
The framework is particularly concerned with the quality of analytical conviction. An investment thesis should be tested against contrary evidence, alternative explanations, hidden dependencies and second-order consequences. A system that simply reinforces an existing view may increase confidence without improving understanding.
ALTERNATIVE INTELLIGENCE® considers how artificial intelligence can strengthen research, due diligence, monitoring and investment analysis while retaining the independence and critical judgement required in specialist investment markets.
Its underlying proposition is that information is not intelligence, and conviction is not evidence.
4. APPLIED INTELLIGENCE® — Chartered insurance underwriting agents
APPLIED INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for chartered insurance underwriting agents.
Insurance underwriting agents operate at the intersection of risk, information, professional expertise and delegated authority. Their work may involve assessing submissions, understanding insured exposures, interpreting policy requirements, evaluating supporting documentation, determining appropriate terms and maintaining relationships with insurers and intermediaries.
Artificial intelligence may assist in the examination of submissions, the extraction and comparison of information, the identification of inconsistencies, the assessment of relevant risk characteristics and the preparation of underwriting recommendations.
The framework considers how intelligence can be applied throughout the underwriting process, from initial risk presentation and information gathering to pricing, referrals, policy administration, claims feedback and portfolio analysis.
Particular attention is given to the quality of information supplied, the limits of automated assessment, the exercise of delegated authority and the responsibility of the underwriting professional.
APPLIED INTELLIGENCE® is concerned with using technology to strengthen the practical application of underwriting knowledge, not to diminish the importance of specialist judgement. Its objective is more informed, consistent and defensible underwriting decisions.
5. AUGMENTED® — Insurance companies
AUGMENTED® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for insurance companies. It examines how artificial intelligence can augment the intelligence and capabilities of an insurer as an institution.
An insurance company possesses knowledge distributed across underwriting, actuarial analysis, claims, risk engineering, distribution, compliance, finance, investments, customer service and management. Much of this information may be held in separate systems, departments and specialist processes.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence might help connect this knowledge, improve access to relevant information, identify relationships and strengthen decision-making across the organisation.
Its scope includes augmented underwriting, risk selection, pricing, claims intelligence, fraud analysis, customer service, distribution, portfolio management, operational efficiency and institutional memory.
The central proposition is that the purpose of artificial intelligence is not simply to automate individual insurance tasks. It is to improve the intelligence of the insurance institution as a whole.
AUGMENTED® therefore considers the relationship between machine capability and professional expertise, with particular attention to the quality of decisions, appropriate human oversight, governance and the long-term development of organisational capability.
6. AUTHENTIC INTELLIGENCE® — Alien-abduction insurance
AUTHENTIC INTELLIGENCE® is a highly distinctive artificial intelligence consultancy framework for alien-abduction insurance.
Its unusual insurance context provides a particularly interesting setting in which to examine evidence, authenticity, provenance, uncertainty and the assessment of claims. The framework does not presume that extraterrestrial abduction has been established as a fact. Rather, it addresses the insurance and evidential questions associated with unusual, disputed or difficult-to-verify claims.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly capable of generating, altering and synthesising images, audio, video and documentary material. This creates important questions for insurers concerning the authenticity of evidence, the provenance of records, the identification of manipulation and the reliability of information submitted in support of a claim.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence might assist in examining evidence, comparing accounts, identifying inconsistencies, assessing provenance and distinguishing verified information from material requiring further investigation.
Its wider relevance extends beyond this specialist insurance category. The same questions arise in fraud investigation, claims verification, digital evidence, identity, documentary authenticity and the growing problem of synthetic media.
AUTHENTIC INTELLIGENCE® therefore examines the relationship between artificial intelligence, evidence and truth, while recognising that automated analysis cannot replace appropriate investigation and human judgement.
7. AUTONOMOUS® — Life assurance
AUTONOMOUS® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for life assurance companies.
Life assurance involves long-duration commitments, complex financial calculations, sensitive personal information and decisions with potentially profound consequences for individuals and families. The framework considers how artificial intelligence and increasingly autonomous systems may improve the operation of life assurance while ensuring that authority, responsibility and accountability remain properly defined.
Potential applications include underwriting support, policy administration, customer service, claims assessment, fraud identification, actuarial analysis, financial reporting and the management of long-term policy information.
The central question is not simply which tasks can be automated. It is which decisions may appropriately be delegated, under what conditions, with what safeguards and subject to what degree of human oversight.
AUTONOMOUS® examines the boundaries of machine authority, the reliability of automated processes, the consequences of error and the ability of an institution to intervene when circumstances require it.
Its objective is to help life assurance organisations determine how autonomy can be introduced proportionately, without weakening professional responsibility, customer trust or the long-term obligations inherent in life assurance.
8. AUTOTELIC® — Yacht insurance
AUTOTELIC® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for yacht insurance.
A yacht is not simply an insured object. It is simultaneously a complex machine, a vessel, a place of residence, a means of transport, a workplace and an instrument of leisure. Its risk profile depends upon the interaction of the vessel, its owner, crew, passengers, maintenance, navigation, machinery, location, weather, season and intended use.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence may help insurers develop a more complete understanding of the vessel and the circumstances in which it operates.
Relevant information may include vessel specifications, maintenance histories, navigation records, weather conditions, geographical exposure, machinery performance, crew experience, claims history and other relevant operational information.
The framework also examines the possibility of moving beyond static insurance information towards a more continuous understanding of changing risk. Such an approach may support underwriting, risk assessment, loss prevention and claims analysis.
The name AUTOTELIC® draws upon the concepts of self and purpose. Its underlying proposition is that the purpose of a yacht matters to the way in which its risks should be understood.
The objective is to connect artificial intelligence with seamanship, specialist expertise and the safe fulfilment of the vessel's intended purpose.
9. BIONIC INTELLIGENCE® — Managing general agents
BIONIC INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for managing general agents.
Managing general agents operate through specialist underwriting expertise, delegated authority, insurer relationships, distribution networks and the management of portfolios of insurance business. Their effectiveness depends upon the quality of information, the competence of their underwriting teams and their ability to maintain control over the business written under delegated arrangements.
Artificial intelligence may assist in the assessment of submissions, the analysis of underwriting performance, the monitoring of delegated authority, the identification of portfolio trends and the interpretation of claims and bordereaux information.
The framework considers how machine capability can strengthen the relationship between specialist human expertise and the operational systems through which an MGA conducts its business.
Particular attention is given to underwriting discipline, authority management, insurer reporting, portfolio oversight, data quality, operational efficiency and the preservation of specialist knowledge.
BIONIC INTELLIGENCE® is concerned with augmenting the capabilities of the MGA rather than replacing the expertise upon which its business depends. Its objective is a more capable, better-informed and more responsive managing general agency.
10. EMBODIED INTELLIGENCE® — Personal accident insurance
EMBODIED INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for personal accident insurance providers.
Personal accident insurance concerns the consequences of injury to the human body. Its underwriting, claims and service requirements may involve medical information, occupational circumstances, activities, rehabilitation, functional impairment and the financial consequences of an accident.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence may assist in understanding the relationship between the circumstances of an accident, the nature of an injury, the policy terms and the subsequent claims process.
Potential applications include documentary analysis, claims triage, the organisation of medical evidence, identification of missing information, claims monitoring and the analysis of patterns in accident experience.
The framework is particularly concerned with the responsible use of sensitive information. Automated systems must be assessed for reliability, privacy, fairness and the consequences of inaccurate or incomplete conclusions.
EMBODIED INTELLIGENCE® recognises that the human body is not simply a collection of data points. Medical and insurance decisions require appropriate professional interpretation and an understanding of the individual circumstances involved.
Its objective is to improve the intelligence supporting personal accident insurance while preserving the dignity, rights and interests of the people whose lives are affected.
11. ENTERPRISE INTELLIGENCE® — Enterprises
ENTERPRISE INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for enterprises across the wider economy.
Its central concern is the intelligence of the organisation as a whole: how information is collected, understood, retained and applied to decisions throughout the enterprise.
Businesses frequently possess extensive quantities of data, documentation, expertise and operational knowledge, yet this information may be fragmented across departments, systems, individuals and external providers. Important knowledge may remain difficult to access, while decisions may be made without the benefit of relevant information already held elsewhere in the organisation.
Artificial intelligence may assist in connecting information, supporting research, improving internal knowledge access, analysing operational performance and integrating intelligence into everyday business processes.
The framework examines the relationship between technology, organisational design, employee capability, management decisions and commercial outcomes.
It also considers adoption, governance, data architecture, workflow integration, accountability and the measurement of actual contribution.
ENTERPRISE INTELLIGENCE® is founded upon the proposition that the value of artificial intelligence is realised when insight changes decisions and decisions improve outcomes. Its objective is not simply a more automated enterprise, but a more intelligent one.
12. EXPONENTIAL INTELLIGENCE® — Redundancy insurance providers
EXPONENTIAL INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for redundancy insurance providers.
Employment risk is influenced by economic cycles, technological change, corporate performance, industry restructuring, changes in consumer demand and developments in the labour market. Artificial intelligence itself may become an important factor in changing the nature, distribution and speed of employment disruption.
The framework considers how insurers might move beyond reliance upon historical redundancy claims to develop a more forward-looking understanding of employment risk.
Artificial intelligence may assist in analysing company performance, sector conditions, economic indicators, employment information, technological developments and other relevant evidence. It may help identify emerging concentrations, changes in the character of employment risk and relationships that are difficult to recognise through conventional analysis.
Particular attention is given to acceleration: not simply whether a risk is increasing, but the direction, speed and possible consequences of that change.
EXPONENTIAL INTELLIGENCE® also examines the implications of AI-driven economic transformation for the insurance market itself.
Its objective is to improve economic foresight, underwriting intelligence and the ability of redundancy insurers to understand changing patterns of employment risk.
13. FRONTIER INTELLIGENCE® — Offshore energy insurance providers
FRONTIER INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for offshore energy insurance providers.
Offshore energy operates at the intersection of engineering, the ocean, weather, geology, logistics, capital and human activity. Platforms, subsea systems, pipelines, vessels, offshore wind installations and other infrastructure are exposed to complex interactions between physical conditions, equipment performance, supply chains and operational decisions.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence may help insurers understand the offshore asset as part of a wider and continuously changing system.
Relevant areas include engineering records, inspection information, maintenance histories, sensor data, environmental observations, vessel movements, supply-chain dependencies, claims experience and the changing technologies associated with the energy transition.
The framework is particularly concerned with risks for which historical experience may be incomplete. New forms of offshore infrastructure, more remote operating environments and emerging energy technologies require insurers to understand not only familiar risks but also the boundaries of existing knowledge.
FRONTIER INTELLIGENCE® examines how artificial intelligence can assist in extending that understanding while preserving the importance of engineering expertise, underwriting judgement and disciplined treatment of uncertainty.
Its objective is to strengthen the capacity of offshore energy insurers to understand and responsibly insure complex infrastructure at the frontier of technological and environmental change.
14. GENERAL INTELLIGENCE® — Asset management
GENERAL INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for asset management organisations.
Asset management requires the integration of investment research, portfolio construction, risk analysis, client requirements, market intelligence, operational capability and long-term stewardship of capital.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence may strengthen the intelligence of the asset management institution, rather than merely automate individual research or administrative tasks.
Potential applications include investment research, portfolio analysis, market monitoring, risk assessment, client reporting, investment operations, regulatory information and the management of institutional knowledge.
A particularly important consideration is the relationship between information and investment judgement. Artificial intelligence may help process large volumes of market and company information, but investment decisions require an understanding of valuation, uncertainty, client objectives, risk tolerance and the wider economic environment.
The framework therefore considers how machine-generated analysis can be evaluated, challenged and incorporated into investment processes without diminishing the accountability of investment professionals.
GENERAL INTELLIGENCE® addresses the strategic question of how asset managers can become more intelligent institutions: better able to understand markets, allocate capital, serve clients, manage risk and learn from investment experience.
15. GENIUS® — Investment banks
GENIUS® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for investment banks.
Investment banks operate across capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, securities, trading, research, financing and complex financial transactions. Their work involves large quantities of financial, legal, commercial and market information, often under significant time pressure and within demanding regulatory and confidentiality requirements.
Artificial intelligence may assist in analysing transaction documentation, conducting research, evaluating financial information, preparing materials, identifying relationships and supporting risk and compliance processes.
The framework considers how these capabilities may strengthen the analytical and operational intelligence of an investment bank while preserving the professional judgement required in high-value financial transactions.
Particular attention is given to information quality, confidentiality, market-sensitive material, conflicts of interest, model reliability, governance and the consequences of error.
GENIUS® examines the potential for artificial intelligence to improve the quality and speed of investment banking analysis, while recognising that commercial judgement, negotiation, fiduciary responsibilities and the assessment of complex transactions remain matters of considerable human and institutional importance.
16. GENUINE INTELLIGENCE® — Jewellers' block insurance
GENUINE INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for jewellers' block insurance providers.
Jewellers' block insurance involves objects whose value depends upon identity, authenticity, provenance, materials, craftsmanship, condition, ownership, custody, location and market circumstances. The insured property may move between retail premises, workshops, exhibitions, storage facilities, customers and specialist service providers.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence may assist insurers in developing a more complete understanding of the objects and collections they insure.
Potential applications include the analysis of inventories, valuation records, photographs, provenance documentation, security information, movement records, claims experience and market information.
The framework also considers the growing importance of authenticity and documentary integrity in an environment where images and records can be manipulated or synthetically generated.
Artificial intelligence may help identify inconsistencies, connect records and direct specialist attention towards matters requiring further examination. It cannot, by itself, conclusively establish the authenticity or value of every object.
GENUINE INTELLIGENCE® therefore seeks to combine technological analysis with gemmological, jewellery, valuation and insurance expertise. Its objective is to improve the understanding and protection of genuine value.
17. HYPERINTELLIGENCE® — Commercial banks
HYPERINTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for commercial banks.
Commercial banks occupy a distinctive position within the economy. Their activities connect businesses, households, deposits, lending, payments, liquidity, investment and financial relationships. The information generated through these activities may provide valuable insight into the financial condition and changing requirements of businesses and markets.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence might help commercial banks connect information that is otherwise distributed across customers, transactions, credit, relationship management, risk, operations and financial markets.
Potential applications include credit analysis, customer intelligence, liquidity management, financial crime detection, portfolio monitoring, early-warning systems and the assessment of changing economic conditions.
A central concern is whether a bank can understand the relationships within its own information sufficiently well to identify emerging risks and opportunities.
HYPERINTELLIGENCE® is therefore concerned with the development of a more comprehensive institutional understanding of commercial banking, its customers and the wider economy.
Its objective is to strengthen banking judgement, financial trust, resilience and the capacity of commercial banks to create sustainable value.
18. INFINITE INTELLIGENCE® — Kidnap and ransom insurance
INFINITE INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for kidnap and ransom insurance providers.
Kidnap and ransom insurance concerns some of the most serious and sensitive risks encountered in the insurance industry. Its environment may involve individuals, families, employees, organisations, geographical exposure, security conditions, travel, political instability and rapidly changing circumstances.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence may assist in connecting relevant information to support prevention, underwriting, risk assessment, crisis response and institutional learning.
Potential applications include the analysis of geographical and security information, the assessment of changing exposure, the organisation of incident information, the monitoring of relevant developments and the examination of previous claims and response experience.
The framework is particularly concerned with the importance of human judgement in situations where decisions may have direct consequences for human life. Technology must support, rather than compromise, the expertise, discretion and responsibility required in crisis management and specialist response.
INFINITE INTELLIGENCE® examines how artificial intelligence can improve the organisation's ability to understand complex human-security risks while preserving confidentiality, professional judgement and appropriate control.
Its ultimate objective is the protection of human life.
19. INTELLIGENCE® — Retail banks
INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for retail banks.
Retail banks hold extensive information about the financial activities of individuals and households. Their services encompass current accounts, savings, mortgages, lending, payments, financial difficulties, customer service and the wider financial lives of their customers.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence might help banks understand customers more completely and connect information that is otherwise fragmented across products, services, transactions and internal departments.
Potential applications include customer service, financial wellbeing, fraud detection, credit assessment, mortgage and savings services, customer communications, operational efficiency and the identification of changing financial circumstances.
The framework is particularly concerned with using information constructively and proportionately. A bank should not confuse the possession of customer data with an understanding of the customer's circumstances, nor should greater analytical capability become an excuse for inappropriate surveillance or intrusive treatment.
INTELLIGENCE® considers how artificial intelligence may strengthen the relationship between a bank and its customers through better-informed service, more appropriate decisions and more effective institutional learning.
Its objective is to improve financial trust, resilience and human financial wellbeing.
20. NEURAL INTELLIGENCE® — General insurance agents
NEURAL INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for general insurance agents.
Insurance agencies operate through relationships between customers, insurers, brokers, underwriters, policy information, renewals, claims and specialist insurance requirements. Their effectiveness depends upon the quality of advice, the accuracy of information and the ability of staff to manage a complex and changing flow of business.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence may help agencies connect their information, improve workflows, strengthen customer service and preserve the specialist knowledge accumulated through their operations.
Potential applications include the analysis of submissions, document processing, renewal management, customer communications, insurer information, claims administration, management information and the identification of emerging customer requirements.
The framework is also concerned with organisational learning. Knowledge should not remain confined to individual employees or isolated records. An intelligent agency should be able to retain, retrieve and apply relevant experience in a consistent and responsible manner.
NEURAL INTELLIGENCE® examines how artificial intelligence can augment the capabilities of insurance professionals while maintaining appropriate customer confidentiality, accountability and professional judgement.
Its objective is a more capable, adaptive and intelligent insurance agency.
21. REAL INTELLIGENCE® — Fine art and specie insurance
REAL INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for fine art and specie insurance providers.
Fine art and specie insurance concerns objects and collections whose value may be exceptional, difficult to establish and dependent upon a combination of physical, historical, cultural, commercial and evidential factors.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence may assist insurers in understanding the objects they protect, including their identity, authenticity, provenance, condition, valuation, ownership, location, custody, movement and market circumstances.
Potential applications include the analysis of collection records, valuation documentation, condition reports, provenance information, security arrangements, movement records, claims histories and market developments.
The framework is particularly concerned with the distinction between an insurance schedule and the underlying object. A schedule is a representation of the object, not the object itself. Better intelligence may require connecting information about the object with its history, condition, custody and changing circumstances.
Artificial intelligence may help organise and compare evidence, but specialist expertise remains essential in authentication, valuation and the interpretation of complex art and specie risks.
REAL INTELLIGENCE® seeks to improve the accurate understanding and protection of exceptional value.
22. RECURSIVE INTELLIGENCE® — General reinsurance organisations
RECURSIVE INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for general reinsurance organisations.
Reinsurance institutions operate across portfolios, cedants, territories, classes of business, catastrophe exposures and complex financial relationships. Their decisions depend upon the interpretation of extensive historical information and the ability to understand how actual experience differs from expectations.
The framework is concerned with institutional learning: the ability to examine the outcomes of previous decisions, understand where assumptions proved reliable or unreliable and incorporate those findings into future analysis.
Artificial intelligence may assist in connecting underwriting information, claims experience, catastrophe data, portfolio performance, cedant information and capital considerations.
The framework considers how reinsurance organisations can learn systematically from differences between predicted and actual outcomes, identify emerging patterns and improve the quality of future underwriting and portfolio decisions.
Its distinctive proposition is that the value of intelligence does not lie solely in the original prediction. It also lies in what the institution learns when reality differs from that prediction.
RECURSIVE INTELLIGENCE® therefore seeks to strengthen the capacity of reinsurers to improve through experience, iteration and disciplined institutional learning.
23. REFLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE® — General reinsurance brokers
REFLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for general reinsurance brokers.
Reinsurance brokers operate between insurers and reinsurers, helping to structure, negotiate and place complex risk-transfer arrangements. Their work requires an understanding of clients, markets, capital, risk appetite, contract structures, specialist requirements and the commercial circumstances surrounding each placement.
The framework is particularly concerned with the quality of judgement applied before artificial intelligence is adopted. It asks whether a proposed system addresses a genuine business problem, whether the expected benefits are supported by evidence, whether alternatives have been considered and whether the total costs and dependencies are justified.
Artificial intelligence may assist in analysing contracts, market information, portfolio data, documentation and placement requirements. However, the framework also recognises that a simpler process, improved information management or additional specialist expertise may sometimes be more appropriate.
REFLECTIVE INTELLIGENCE® is therefore an independent and question-led approach. Its purpose is not to maximise technology adoption, but to establish when artificial intelligence is justified and how it can make a meaningful contribution.
Its central proposition is that the essential question is not what artificial intelligence can do, but what it is worth doing.
24. SENTIENT® — Financial advisory organisations
SENTIENT® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for financial advisory organisations.
Financial advice requires the interpretation of information in the context of an individual client's circumstances, objectives, financial position, preferences and future requirements. The quality of advice depends not simply upon calculations or the production of recommendations, but upon suitability, understanding, professional judgement and trust.
Artificial intelligence may assist advisers in research, information organisation, financial analysis, documentation, client communications and the preparation of advice. It may also help advisers understand complex information and identify matters requiring further consideration.
The framework examines how these capabilities can be introduced without weakening the professional responsibilities associated with financial advice.
Particular attention is given to client confidentiality, suitability, explainability, oversight, regulatory obligations and the distinction between machine-generated analysis and professional recommendation.
SENTIENT® is concerned with improving the intelligence available to advisers so that they can exercise better-informed judgement in the interests of their clients.
The name is used as a trade mark and does not imply that artificial intelligence systems are conscious or possess human sentience.
25. SINGULARITY® — General insurance providers
SINGULARITY® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for general insurance providers.
Artificial intelligence presents insurers with a dual challenge. It may provide powerful new capabilities for underwriting, claims, pricing and risk management, while also creating or changing the risks that insurers may be asked to insure.
The framework considers the implications of increasingly capable artificial intelligence for insurance markets, including the emergence of new exposures, changing liability questions, technological dependencies, systemic concentrations and the potential consequences of failures affecting interconnected systems.
It also examines how insurers can use artificial intelligence to improve their own understanding of these risks.
Potential applications include emerging-risk research, portfolio analysis, underwriting, claims intelligence, risk accumulation, scenario analysis and the assessment of changing technological and commercial conditions.
A central question is whether a risk is genuinely understood and whether it can be assessed, priced and transferred responsibly. The existence of a market for insurance does not, by itself, establish that a risk is sufficiently understood to be insurable.
SINGULARITY® therefore seeks to strengthen the capacity of insurers to examine the changing boundaries of insurability while preserving sound underwriting judgement and disciplined treatment of uncertainty.
26. SUPERHUMAN® — Risk management companies
SUPERHUMAN® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for risk management companies.
The framework examines how artificial intelligence may extend the analytical reach of risk management beyond the practical limits of conventional human information processing.
Modern organisations face increasingly interconnected risks across technology, finance, operations, supply chains, cyber security, regulation, reputation and the wider economic environment. Risk professionals must often assess large quantities of information while identifying relationships and concentrations that may be difficult to recognise through conventional methods.
Artificial intelligence may assist in analysing complex information, monitoring changes, identifying patterns, examining scenarios and connecting risks across organisational boundaries.
However, greater analytical capacity also creates new dependencies. Systems may share common providers, models, data sources or infrastructure, potentially creating concentrations and vulnerabilities that require their own assessment.
SUPERHUMAN® considers how artificial intelligence can strengthen risk intelligence while preserving independent challenge, accountability and professional judgement.
Its central question is not simply whether a machine can analyse more information than a person, but whether the organisation becomes better at understanding and managing risk.
27. SUPERINTELLIGENCE® — Financial technology companies
SUPERINTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for financial technology companies.
Financial technology businesses operate in an environment where technology, capital, regulation, customer expectations and competitive advantage are closely connected. Their decisions may involve the development or acquisition of artificial intelligence capabilities, the economics of technology platforms, proprietary data, product design, operating models and the strategic positioning of the enterprise.
The framework considers how fintech companies should assess the commercial and strategic implications of increasingly capable artificial intelligence.
Potential areas of examination include technology selection, investment prioritisation, product development, data strategy, platform architecture, supplier dependence, operating costs, governance and the relationship between technical capability and enterprise value.
The framework is particularly concerned with the economics of intelligence. Access to a powerful model does not necessarily establish a durable competitive advantage. The more important questions may concern how the technology is integrated into the business, what proprietary knowledge or data the organisation contributes and whether the resulting capability creates value that competitors cannot readily reproduce.
SUPERINTELLIGENCE® therefore considers artificial intelligence as a strategic investment and a potential source of enterprise capability, rather than simply a technology procurement decision.
Its objective is durable enterprise value through better strategic judgement.
28. TRUE INTELLIGENCE® — Chartered financial planners
TRUE INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for chartered financial planners.
Financial planning concerns the totality of an individual's financial life. It may involve investments, pensions, taxation, inheritance, protection, retirement, family circumstances, business interests and long-term personal objectives.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence can assist financial planners in organising information, conducting research, examining scenarios, preparing documentation and supporting the delivery of advice.
However, the central value of financial planning lies in understanding the individual client and applying professional judgement to that person's circumstances. Calculations and projections are important, but they do not independently establish what is appropriate for a particular individual or family.
TRUE INTELLIGENCE® therefore examines how technology can reduce administrative burdens and improve access to information while enabling professional advisers to devote greater attention to interpretation, suitability, relationships and long-term planning.
The framework also considers confidentiality, data security, regulatory requirements, explainability and the preservation of professional accountability.
The term TRUE INTELLIGENCE® refers to the application of sound judgement to information in its proper context. It is not a claim that artificial intelligence systems possess consciousness or human understanding.
29. UNIVERSAL INTELLIGENCE® — Film and television production insurance providers
UNIVERSAL INTELLIGENCE® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for film and television production insurance providers.
Film and television productions are complex commercial and creative undertakings involving intellectual property, people, locations, equipment, financing, contracts, schedules, specialist suppliers and multiple forms of operational dependency.
Artificial intelligence is changing the production environment itself. It may influence writing, image generation, visual effects, editing, sound, post-production and other creative and technical activities. These developments create new questions for insurers concerning authorship, consent, likeness, provenance, intellectual property, contractual obligations and the reliability of production processes.
The framework also considers artificial intelligence as a tool for the insurer. It may assist in analysing production documentation, schedules, budgets, contracts, risk information and claims experience.
A particularly important issue is the possibility of common dependencies across apparently separate productions. Several productions may rely upon the same underlying technology, provider or infrastructure, creating concentrations of exposure that are not immediately apparent when each production is considered individually.
UNIVERSAL INTELLIGENCE® examines how insurers can understand the changing relationship between creative production, technology, commercial risk and insurance. Its objective is the responsible understanding and transfer of production risk.
30. X® — Building societies
X® is an artificial intelligence consultancy framework for building societies.
Building societies occupy a distinctive position within the British financial system. They are mutual institutions whose purpose, ownership structure and relationship with members distinguish them from conventional shareholder-owned banks.
The framework considers how artificial intelligence can strengthen the intelligence of a building society without diminishing the mutual, local and human characteristics that give the institution its distinctive identity.
Potential applications include member intelligence, mortgage services, savings, customer relationships, financial wellbeing, lending, risk management, fraud prevention, operational efficiency and the preservation of institutional knowledge.
A central concern is the relationship between the building society and its members. The institution should understand not simply individual transactions or products, but the wider financial circumstances, needs and relationships that shape members' lives.
The framework also considers how a building society can connect information across its branches, employees, systems, communities, balance sheet and governance arrangements.
X® is particularly concerned with the preservation of mutual purpose. Artificial intelligence should strengthen the institution's ability to serve its members and communities, not turn the building society into an impersonal technology platform.
Its governing proposition is that the intelligence of the mutual should be strengthened, while its underlying purpose remains intact.
The national opportunity
The portfolio raises a wider question about the role of British intellectual property in the development of artificial intelligence.
The United Kingdom has internationally recognised research institutions, universities, scientific expertise, financial markets, engineering capabilities and established industrial sectors. It also has a substantial history of developing intellectual property and commercial ideas that can contribute to technological progress.
We believe that the development of artificial intelligence should be considered in this broader context. Research into increasingly capable machines is fundamental, but so too is the development of intellectual property, specialist knowledge, institutional applications and commercial frameworks through which those capabilities can be translated into practical economic and societal contribution.
The thirty frameworks are one expression of that ambition. They provide a structured way of examining the potential application of artificial intelligence across different sectors, while recognising that each institution must be understood in its own context.
Our objective is to ensure that this body of British intellectual property is developed constructively, with the potential to contribute to the United Kingdom's long-term position in machine intelligence and the wider intelligence economy.
